Smart Gardening by Design: Ulster University Unveils Lilian’s Auto Dispensing Trowel Prototype

Lilian’s Auto Dispensing Trowel is an innovative gardening tool designed to make planting seeds easier, more accurate and more accessible. Created while she was in Year 13, Lilian’s idea reimagines a traditional garden trowel by combining it with a built-in seed dispensing system, helping users plant seeds with the push of a button.

The Ulster University ProtoTeam selected this idea because of its potential to support people who may find gardening physically challenging. The design particularly considered individuals with reduced hand-eye coordination, limited mobility, weaker grip strength or anyone who finds repetitive seed planting difficult. The team was also impressed by the clarity and detail of Lilian’s original design brief, which provided a strong foundation for developing the prototype.

A key objective throughout the project was to preserve the features that were central to Lilian’s vision. The team identified several essential elements from her concept, including a mechanical seed dispenser, a comfortable handle, measurement markings on the trowel blade and a dedicated opening for loading seeds. These features were all incorporated into the final prototype.

Building on Lilian’s idea, the team developed a multifunctional tool that combines digging and planting in a single device. By integrating the seed dispenser directly into the trowel, users can create a hole and dispense a seed without needing to switch between different tools. This approach reduces effort, saves time and simplifies the planting process.

The prototype also includes an ergonomic handle designed to improve comfort during use. This was an important consideration as the project aimed to make gardening more accessible to a wider range of users. The team carefully refined the design to reduce strain on the hand and wrist while maintaining ease of operation.

Several innovative engineering solutions were incorporated into the final design. One feature allows the trowel head to rotate through 360 degrees and be locked into a position that suits the individual user. The team also developed a dispensing mechanism that uses a neoprene block rather than a traditional spring, providing the required function while avoiding issues that can arise when metal springs are exposed to moisture and outdoor conditions.

Although inspired by an everyday gardening tool, the finished prototype extends beyond the function of a standard trowel. By combining seed storage, dispensing and digging capabilities into a single product, the design demonstrates how existing concepts can be adapted to create practical solutions that improve usability and accessibility.

The Auto Dispensing Trowel showcases how a simple but thoughtful idea can encourage more people to enjoy gardening by making seed planting quicker, easier and less physically demanding, while remaining true to Lilian’s original vision.

The finished prototype was officially unveiled on 24th June at the Northern Ireland regional award ceremony hosted at Ulster University.
