Pawsitively Warm: Thales Belfast Unveils James’ App-Controlled Kennel Prototype
James’ Marvellous Dog Heater is a thoughtful invention designed to help dogs stay warm and comfortable when they need to spend time outdoors. Developed from James’ own experience with his dog Barney, the idea focuses on improving the wellbeing of pets while giving owners an easy way to monitor and manage their comfort.
The Thales Belfast ProtoTeam chose this idea because it addressed a real problem faced by many pet owners. The concept combines care for animals with practical technology, creating a solution that could help owners feel confident that their dogs are comfortable, even when they are not able to be indoors.
The idea centres on a heated dog kennel system that can be controlled through a mobile app. Using the app, owners can manage the temperature and monitor their dog’s environment without needing to physically access the kennel. The concept aims to provide enhanced comfort for dogs while making it easier for owners to look after their pets.
The team was particularly interested in the engineering challenges presented by the project. Important considerations included pet safety, creating a design suitable for different dog breeds and sizes, and ensuring the system could operate efficiently in a range of environments. These challenges provided opportunities to explore how technology can be used to improve everyday life for both people and animals.
Throughout development, the team worked closely with James to ensure the project remained faithful to his original vision. Early stages included concept sketches and computer-aided design models to explore how the heater might function in practice. As the project’s Design Authority, James was involved in reviewing ideas and providing feedback as the prototype took shape.
The resulting prototype develops James’ concept into a practical solution for outdoor dog housing. Designed with safety, adaptability and ease of use in mind, the system can be applied to a variety of kennel sizes and environments, while allowing owners to monitor and control conditions remotely.
The Marvellous Dog Heater demonstrates how a personal experience can inspire an engineering solution with the potential to benefit pets and their owners. By combining technology with a focus on animal welfare, James’ idea highlights how young people can identify everyday challenges and develop creative solutions to address them.
The finished prototype was officially unveiled on 24th June at the Northern Ireland regional award ceremony hosted at Ulster University.
