From Personal Injury to Aviation Innovation: The Civil Aviation Authority reveals the ‘UpClip’ prototype

The UpClip, designed by Year 11 student Jacob, is an innovative mobility aid that supports users when sitting down or standing up.

The original concept for the UpClip was inspired by a real-world accessibility challenge. Following an injury for Jacob, the designer, and a family member experienced difficulties with the everyday task of sitting down and standing up from a chair. This personal experience led to the creation of an innovative concept designed to provide practical assistance and improve independence for users facing mobility challenges.

The protype, created by the Civil Aviation Authority, features a lightweight yet robust frame with adjustable handles, it can be tailored to individual needs. Developed to improve accessibility within the aviation and aerospace industry and enhance passenger independence, its versatile design is equally suited to public transport and home environments. Beyond its practical application, the UpClip encourages important conversations about accessibility, inclusive design, and how the aviation and aerospace sectors can better support people of all abilities.

The finished prototype was officially unveiled on 9th July at the Greater Manchester regional award ceremony hosted at the University of Manchester.
