Canterbury Christ Church University creating the Handy Greywater Pump

Canterbury Christ Church University will turn Year 3 pupil Charlie’s Handy Greywater Pump idea into reality for their prototype build as part of a continued partnership between Canterbury Christ Church University and Primary Engineer.

Canterbury Christ Church University are a University Prototyping Partner for South East England as part of our annual engineering competition which asks pupils aged 3-19 ‘If you were an engineer what would you do?’ and encourages pupils come up with creative solutions to real-world problems.

Charlie, a Year 3 pupil, was awarded a Highly Commended for his design of Handy Greywater Pump.

Canterbury Christ Church University have selected his design to turn into a prototype over the 2023/2024 academic year which will be unveiled at the next South East Awards Ceremony and Public Exhibition during the Summer term. They chose this design based on its green potential, as they are interested in the issues of water recycling and the possibility of reusing grey water.

Beginning the prototype

The ProtoTeam at Canterbury Christ Church University started the design phrase of this project in October 2023 which consists of throwing ideas around, creating an inspiration board of ideas and asking questions. Grey water recycling is a system that can be built into modern buildings but the team wonder how can it be retrofitted into older buildings?

The team are planning to do a lot of the manufacturing in-house as they have already had success with making a pump for a final-year project.

We can’t wait for the next update on this prototype when they have finalised the designs and decided on the manufacturing processes they will be using.
