A heartwarming first update on the Marvelous Dog Heater!

Introduction to the ProtoTeam

The Thales Belfast ProtoTeam is delighted to share that they have chosen the Marvelous Dog Heater as their project for this year. This heartwarming idea was created by James who attends Portavogie Primary School. James’s concept immediately captured the team’s attention and inspired them to get started.

The idea came from James’s own experience with his dog Barney. Due to medical reasons Barney had to stay outdoors, which led James to think about how dogs could stay warm and comfortable when they cannot be indoors. The Marvelous Dog Heater aims to give dog owners peace of mind by allowing them to control warmth and comfort for their pets using an app on their phone.

Six members of the Thales Early Careers programme are working together to bring this thoughtful idea to life. The team is excited to combine their skills and creativity to develop a solution that could make a real difference to pets and their owners.

Why did they choose this idea to build

The team felt James’s idea was both brilliant and meaningful. It addresses a problem that many pet owners have experienced and offers a clear benefit to animal wellbeing. By focusing on comfort and care the idea has strong emotional value as well as practical purpose.

The concept also presents a number of interesting engineering challenges. These include ensuring pet safety, making the heater suitable for dogs of different sizes and breeds, and designing a solution that is energy efficient and sustainable for everyday use. These challenges made the project both engaging and rewarding for the team to take on.

Starting the prototype

The team began by exploring what the Marvelous Dog Heater could look like in real life. This involved creating early concept sketches and developing initial computer aided design models. These early steps helped the team visualise the product and think through how it might function.

After developing the first concepts the team met with James who is the Design Authority for the project. During this meeting James shared feedback and expanded on his ideas for the dog heater. The team also signed a contract with James to show their commitment to respecting his vision and bringing his idea fully to life.

Next steps

The team will continue to develop and review a range of design ideas as the project moves forward. They will work closely with James to make sure the final design meets all the requirements set out in the contract and stays true to his original idea.

As development of the Marvelous Dog Heater continues the team will share further updates so everyone can follow the journey. They are excited to show how this caring pupil idea is being transformed into a real engineering solution.
