A brilliant first and midpoint update on the Upclip prototype!
Introduction to the ProtoTeam
The CAA STEM ProtoTeam selected the Upclip design after carefully reviewing all of the winning ideas. The team shortlisted several strong concepts and then voted to decide which idea to develop. While all of the shortlisted designs showed great potential, the Upclip stood out not only for its creativity but also for the inspiring purpose behind it.

The ProtoTeam is made up of a range of skilled individuals who bring both experience and strong teamwork to the project. The group includes returning members from last year as well as new team members, creating a balanced mix of knowledge and fresh ideas. This combination has helped build a strong foundation for the project from the very beginning.
The team’s first approach was to interpret the Upclip design individually. Each member explored different aspects of the idea and used their own skills to consider how it could be brought to life. These ideas were then shared and discussed, with the team voting again to identify the design direction that stayed closest to the original concept.
As the team members are volunteers working alongside their main roles, planning time to meet has been important. The group arranged regular sessions to coordinate tasks and assign responsibilities, while continuing to collaborate and support each other throughout the process.
Progress so far
Since the initial stages the team has moved forward from early interpretations to developing a base design that they are confident in. Throughout this stage the team has remained open to new ideas and suggestions, adapting the design where needed while continuing to stay true to the original concept.

One of the main areas of focus has been material choice. The team carefully considered which materials would best support the purpose of the Upclip and whether certain options would improve or limit its effectiveness. These discussions have played a key role in shaping the development of the design.
As the project moved from drawings to an early build concept, it became clear that there were many possible ways the design could evolve. While these opportunities are valuable, the team has remained focused on maintaining the integrity of the original idea.
Challenges encountered
The team is working within the limits of a regulatory organisation which means there is no direct access to manufacturing facilities. This has created an extra layer of challenge when considering how to produce and test the prototype.
Balancing different design possibilities while staying true to the original idea has also been a key consideration. The team continues to review changes carefully to ensure that any development supports the purpose of the Upclip.
Next steps
The current focus is on understanding how the design can be built in a practical way. The team is now exploring whether the prototype can be developed using available resources or whether collaboration with an external partner will be the best approach.
As the project continues the team will refine the design further and begin preparing for the next stage of development. They are excited to continue progressing the Upclip and look forward to sharing further updates as the idea moves closer to becoming a working prototype.
