Meet Our First Guest 👋

Mark your calendars for Thursday 25th September at 1pm!

This September marks the 200th anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, a historic event that helped connect our country. To honour this milestone, we’re starting our live interview series talking about the railways with Carys, a Safety Audit Manager at Great Western Railways.

Carys is a true champion for making railways safer and more accessible for everyone, volunteering hundreds of hours to mentor young people and promote STEM to girls. You may also know her from her bilingual children’s book, Rupee and Sushi Travel by Train, which makes learning about rail safety and accessibility fun and engaging for kids!

This interview would be suitable for:

  • Key Stage 2/Lower Primary (ages 7-11)
  • Key Stage 3/Upper Primary (ages 11-14)

Why take part in the competition? 🎉

Last year, over 45,000 students joined us for live interviews with engineers from all kinds of backgrounds. We spoke with a NASA scientist, a Top 50 Women in Engineering Award winner, one of the UK’s only female Railfreight Drivers, and more! These interviews are just the beginning..

Once your pupils have interviewed an engineer, they start looking at the world around them to see if there is a problem they can solve with engineering. They create an annotated drawing of how their idea would work and write a letter to an engineer explaining why their idea should be built.

All entries are read and graded by professional engineers, with every single pupil who takes part receiving a named and graded certificate! The competition culminates in exciting regional public exhibitions and award ceremonies, where shortlisted designs are displayed, and the winners and highly commended are invited on stage to receive their awards, with a surprise awarding of the judge’s favourite at the end.
