First Steps of the Hot Hands Prototype Build!
Introduction to the ProtoTeam
Our Howden ProtoTeam has begun work on the Hot Hands prototype and is excited to bring this entry to life! Our Industry and University ProtoTeam Builds are part of the ‘If you were an engineer what would you do?’ competition. These builds are created through Primary Engineer ProtoTeams which bring together schools pupils university groups and industry partners. Each ProtoTeam chooses one idea from a shortlist of pupil drawings and begins the journey of turning it from a simple sketch into something real!
Why did they choose this entry to build?
The team selected Hannah’s design because it solves a clear everyday problem in a simple way. Hannah, who was in nursery when she submitted the entry, explained how cold hands can make winter days uncomfortable and designed a smart and easy idea to help! The concept is practical and fits well with Howden’s engineering themes. It gives the team a strong base for learning about problem solving and thoughtful design. The Hot Hands project supports these aims with a clear purpose and a friendly focus on comfort and wellbeing!

Starting the prototype
The ProtoTeam is now starting the first planning steps. The group has experience in electrical integration and ergonomic product design, which will help them build a safe and comfortable model. In the coming weeks they will explore the structure needed for the design the heating feature and the power source: and will look carefully at safety needs for warm components. They will also build an early model to understand how the handle feels to hold and search for heating parts that match the idea. Each of these steps helps the Hot Hands project move forward with care and steady progress!
Next steps
The team will continue to shape the early model of the Hot Hands Prototype and review what works well. As the Hot Hands project develops the ProtoTeam will keep sharing updates so everyone can follow the journey of Hannah’s drawing to a working prototype full of creativity and purpose!
