School success with STATWARS: Climate Change Challenge in 2024-25

STATWARS: Climate Change Challenge is a national data competition with multiple curriculum links to science, mathematics, computing, and engineering as well as english and geography. In total, we saw 2,641 Pupils from 91 Schools take part in the STATWARS: Climate Change Challenge.
The competition empowers and educates pupils in Key Stage 2 and 3, aged 8-14, to tackle climate change and influence others through social agency using data they capture themselves. Pupils use our carbon footprint calculator to work out their own carbon footprint, then use this data to identify three pledges they can personally make in their daily lives to help tackle climate change and encourage others to do the same.

Pupils create posters, infographics, write a letter to their local MP’s and videos to explain what changes they are committing to make, and why others should too. We saw over 40 different kinds of pledges this year including:
- Buy food locally to reduced carbon foot print
- Limit the number of times we do overnight charging
- Rewear clothes before we wash them
- Seek local council support
- Spend more time outside
- To fully make sure we have powered off the Chromebook instead of signing out
STATWARS was run across the UK in the 2024–2025 academic year thanks to the support of the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust (RAFCT), Aggreko, Anglia Ruskin University, Northern Powergrid, Siemens and SSE Renewables. To enhance and deepen the learning, our STATWARS partners produced engaging video content to highlight data engineers at their company explaining what they do and sharing what pledges they’d make.
STATWARS: Climate Change Challenge equips pupils with the core data skills needed for the work of work as well as developing other skills like numeracy, decision making teamwork and communication skills. The competition has multiple curriculum links with subject such as science, mathematics, computing, and engineering as well as english and geography. This was seen by schools like Dalbeattie High School where one of the highlights was “seeing pupils make connections and apply learning from different classes”.

Rebecca Dean, Service Delivery Co-ordinator said “I love to see their pride, they worked so hard and that clearly shows in their work. Their big smiles just say it all for me. And speaking to their teacher and hearing about their entry beforehand and how proud they were…to get this photo, that also showed how proud the teacher and the school was too, it was a really special moment! We don’t often see the STATWARRIORS, just their entries. And I couldn’t be happier that it was different in this case!”
Every single pupil who takes part receives a graded certificate, and a share of up to £5,000 of eco-prizes available to winning schools.
